This spring a second class of Strada Scholars will celebrate an important milestone as they complete their undergraduate degrees.

The students’ college education was supported by the Strada HBCU Initiative, which focuses on leadership development and elevating the transformative influence of historically Black colleges and universities. Forty-seven HBCUs partner with Strada as part of the initiative.

Beginning in 2021, those institutions have chosen a selection of their first-year students as Strada Scholars. These students receive annual scholarships, yearly stipends to offset the cost of participating in internship opportunities, leadership development training, access to work-based learning experiences, and exposure and connections to various graduate school and career options to increase postgraduate success.

Research shows that paid internships are linked to a higher likelihood that the first job after graduation will require a college degree, and 63 percent of Strada Scholars in this graduating class participated in a paid internship during their undergraduate years. By comparison, 37 percent of seniors at four-year institutions in 2025 completed a paid internship.

“We celebrate the graduation of the second cohort of Strada Scholars and congratulate them for their hard work,” said Daryl Graham, Strada senior vice president of HBCU and engagement. “These new graduates are equipped with vital leadership skills and practical experience, ready to launch their careers or pursue graduate studies. Together with their colleges and universities, we will continue to cheer on their success.”
