2025: What excites us at the intersection of education and work

Large-scale systems-level change requires sustained attention and dedication, so when Strada looks back at progress made over the past year, we are inspired by moments that point toward a future in which every person — no matter where they start — can envision a way ahead that is filled with opportunity.
Here are some moments in education and work that inspired us in 2025:
- A growing number of states engaged with the State Opportunity Index.
The second annual State Opportunity Index was released in October, and more than 300 education and industry leaders from 36 U.S. states came together in Washington, D.C., to explore the data and learn from one another about promising approaches in select states. Since then, Strada researchers have continued to meet with individual states and stakeholder groups, including university and community college partners. The release of the State Opportunity Index is a good reminder that reaching a future in which everyone can envision a clear path forward to economic opportunity requires learning from one another along the way. - The movement to ensure the cost of college is clear and easy to understand.
The cost of higher education continues to be a barrier for some prospective students and their families. But while paying for it is a challenge, the often opaque nature of how institutions present information about costs and financial aid has made the decision-making process even harder. The College Cost Transparency Initiative picked up considerable momentum in 2025, with more than 600 institutions pledging to align their financial aid offers with national standards. Congress, too, has taken an interest. As Strada Senior Vice President, Affordability, Justin Draeger told the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development: “Students and parents are not asking for miracles. They’re asking for honesty, predictability, and partners. If we want to tackle affordability, we have to start with clarity.” - National organizations stood up for guidance that helps students transition through education and into careers.
So far 21 organizations, from the American Council on Education to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, have endorsed the Principles for Quality Education-to-Career Guidance. Released in October 2024 and developed by an advisory group of leaders and practitioners from postsecondary education, nonprofit organizations, and workforce development organizations, the Principles identify the practices, services, and resources that are key to supporting students for a successful transition through education and into careers. - The Class of 2025 included the first graduating class of Strada Scholars.
The Strada HBCU Initiative is now in its fourth year, a milestone for the 100-plus Strada Scholars who graduated in 2025. The students receive annual scholarships, yearly stipends to offset the cost of participating in internship opportunities, leadership development training, access to work-based learning experience, and exposure and connections to various graduate school and career options to increase postgraduate success. - Leaders from dozens of states are working to improve how they collect and use employment outcome data.
These 100-plus representatives at the meeting of the Postsecondary Employment Outcomes Coalition weren’t just discerning how to improve data systems within their states; they wanted to figure out how to get state data systems talking across state lines, too. The meeting brought together the organization’s network of postsecondary leaders from colleges, universities, state agencies, and other institutions to share information in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau.
- Students at eight universities across the nation are benefiting from innovations in guidance and career services, thanks to grants awarded this year.
The institutions selected for the Innovation in Career Services grants received up to $300,000 each to design, implement, and evaluate innovative approaches to career services that are aligned with the Principles for Education-to-Career Guidance. Research shows students who receive timely, supportive guidance are more likely to secure a good first job, but only about 1 in 5 bachelor’s degree graduates report receiving this level of guidance. The impact of these grants just might be something to look forward to in 2026.
